The Experience Japan Seminar Series – “Beyond Japanese” –will consist of two lectures on Japanese language and translation in Japanese popular media.
“The Japanese writing system: Challenges & strategies for the language teachers & learner’s”
by Dr. Heath Rose (TCD)
This presentation investigates the challenges faced by the language learner when learning the Japanese writing system, focusing particularly on kanji. The presentation draws on a number of studies that broaden our understanding of how learners approach this difficult script, and offers strategies for Japanese language teachers, students, and those with an emerging interest in the Japanese language.
“Fan Translation of Anime, Manga & Video Games: Hard fun to engage learners”
by Dr Minako O’Hagan (DCU).
This lecture will address the increasingly visible translation practices of fans of Japanese popular culture and considers whether they could be a 21st century solution to engaging learners in affective learning.
